Understanding Areas of Interest (AOIs)

An Area of Interest (AOI) is a region selection tool in expoze used to isolate specific parts of a static image and extract predictive visual attention metrics for those targeted areas. An AOI calculates a percentage value between 0% and 100%, representing the likelihood that a viewer will notice the selected region.

Strategic value

Isolating key design elements with AOIs transforms visual heatmap predictions into objective numerical data. Measuring the visual impact of brand logos, call to action buttons, and products makes it simple to compare design performance across multiple layout variations scientifically.

How Area of Interest metrics work

  1. Identify the target regions you want to measure on your asset.
    • Focus on critical design elements such as brand logos, product packaging, main headlines, or call to action buttons.
  2. Review the generated AOI percentage score.
    • Look at the left side panel in the media viewer to locate your calculated percentage value.
    • The score ranges from 0% (no visual attention) to 100% (maximum visual attention), representing how likely the selected region will be seen.
  3. How is the AOI percentage value is calculated?
    • The calculation combines visual salience with the physical surface area of your selected shape. Both the size of your AOI shape and the visual salience within that space affect the overall likelihood that the area gets noticed.
  4. Use AOI values to compare creative performance.
    • Evaluate percentage scores across different design iterations or competitor assets to determine which layout directs the highest focus to your primary elements.

💡Pro Tip

Always draw AOIs around competing elements on the same image. Comparing the percentage score of your call to action against surrounding text blocks reveals whether background clutter is stealing attention from your primary message.
